Airline giant Emirates to accept Bitcoin and crypto payments for flights

Emirates Airlines has officially announced a preliminary partnership with Crypto.com that will allow passengers to pay for flights using Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on July 9, 2025, marks a significant milestone in mainstream crypto adoption within the travel industry.

Under the terms of the agreement, the airline plans to integrate Crypto.com Pay into its booking platform. The system is expected to go live in late 2025 or early 2026, as part of a phased rollout aiming to align with Emirates’ vision to cater to a younger, tech-savvy customer base. Crucially, Emirates will not hold cryptocurrencies on its balance sheet—transactions will be instantly converted to UAE dirhams at real‑time exchange rates, ensuring regulatory compliance and minimizing foreign exchange risk.

This initiative builds upon Dubai’s broader strategy of promoting digital transformation. Since establishing the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in 2022, the UAE has attracted more than 600 crypto firms and has already enabled digital asset payments across retail, real estate, government services, and education.

By venturing into cryptocurrency payments, Emirates joins fellow Gulf carriers like Air Arabia, which earlier this year started accepting the AE Coin stablecoin for ticket purchases. More broadly, this reflects a growing trend in travel and hospitality—evidenced by Bhutan’s national crypto tourism system—demonstrating real-world utility and increasing institutional confidence.

Why it matters

  • For consumers: Offers new, flexible payment methods tapping into digital asset portfolios.
  • For crypto markets: Reinforces momentum for Bitcoin and stablecoins like USDT and USDC.
  • For airlines: Sets a precedent that could pressure global carriers like Delta, Lufthansa, or Qantas to follow.

In sum, Emirates’ move isn’t just a promotional stunt—it signals a broader shift: crypto is moving from niche investment to everyday transaction tool. As travel giant Emirates goes crypto, the runway for real-world digital currency use just got a major upgrade.
