Coinbase Wallet is now Base app, a crypto ‘everything app’

Coinbase Wallet is undergoing a significant transformation, rebranding as “Base app” and aiming to become the crypto world’s first true “everything app.” This strategic pivot, announced at Coinbase’s “A New Day One” event, signals a move beyond traditional crypto wallet functionalities to create a comprehensive, blockchain-native platform.

The Base app is designed to seamlessly integrate social media, payments, trading, and messaging into a single application. Imagine a “WeChat-style” experience, but entirely on-chain. Key features include an open social network powered by Farcaster, where creators can tokenize their posts and earn directly from content, bypassing traditional monetization hurdles. Users can also engage in social trading, observing their network’s activity and swapping tokens directly within the feed.

Beyond social interaction, Base app promises to revolutionize payments with “Base Pay,” enabling free and instant USDC transfers globally, including a planned 1% cashback for U.S. customers paying with USDC at Shopify merchants. The app also introduces a “Sign in with Base” universal identity feature, streamlining access across various decentralized applications. Hundreds of integrated mini-apps, from gaming to DeFi, further expand its utility.

This evolution from a mere wallet to an “everything app” reflects Coinbase’s ambition to drive mainstream crypto adoption by simplifying the on-chain experience and offering tangible utility beyond price speculation. While currently in beta for waitlisted users, the Base app represents a bold step towards a more integrated and user-friendly crypto ecosystem.
